The Stars in the Bright Sky

Description

The Sopranos are back: out of school and out in the world, gathered in Gatwick to plan a super-cheap last-minute holiday reunion. Kay, Kylah, Manda, Rachel and Finn are joined by Finn's equally gorgeous friend Ava and are ready to go on the rampage. Will it be Benidorm or Magaluf, Paris or Las Vegas? One thing is certain: the girls will have a hell of a time getting there. Pitch perfect, darkly comic and brimming with life - in all its squalor, rage, tears and laughter - this is an unforgettable story of female friendship. Longlisted for the 2010 Man Booker Prize.

Winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz and William C. Morris Awards, this poignant and hilarious story of loss and redemption "explores the process of grief, second chances, and even the meaning of life" ("Kirkus Reviews"). The author includes wide-ranging examples of the rat's appearance: in literature - The Pied Piper, Beatrix Potter stories, The Wind in the Willows; in culture - Victorian rat-and-dog baiting pits, its popularity as a pet, even the subject of a '70s pop song; folklore - it was a good luck symbol in ancient Rome, symbol of cunning in Chinese mythology; and psychoanalysis - Freud's Rat Man, for example. The book also seeks to answer two problems raised by the complexity of human attitudes to the rat. The first concerns how it was that the rat came to be seen not just as verminous, but also as being particularly despised for being Art/Fashion in the 21st Century download PDF so - more so, in fact, than other parasitic animals. The second concerns the manner in which human attitudes to the rat can be so contradictory, when admiration for its abilities are set against this idea of hatred. The rat can be found at the heart of human preoccupations with hygiene, sexuality and appetite, and exists as a perverse totem for the worst excesses of human behaviour. In Rat, Jonathan Burt provides a fascinating account of this animal in history, myth and culture.

Elmgreen & Dragset: Trilogy: Celebrity - The One & the Many * The Collectors * The Welfare Show

Description

Based in London and Berlin, Michael Elmgreen (b. 1961, Denmark) and Ingar Dragset (b. 1969, Norway) have worked as a collaborative team since the mid-1990s. In 2006, their Welfare Show at the Serpentine Gallery invited viewers to consider societal power structures, including economic disparity, health care, immigration, travel, prostitution, the police state and the role art plays in society. The duo were awarded Special Mention at the 2009 Venice Biennale for The Collectors, their highly elaborate and widely acclaimed exhibition for the Danish and Nordic Pavilions, while their 2011 work "Celebrity: The One and the Many" addresses rumour-mongering, life in the public eye, the machinations of the media and its formation of myths. This book thoroughly documents these projects, showing how the artists' sculptures and installations reconfigure the familiar with characteristic wit and subversive humour. The book also includes interviews with the duo and with French philosopher Paul Virilio.

Winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz and William C. Morris Awards, this poignant and hilarious story of loss and redemption "explores the process of grief, second chances, and even the meaning of life" ("Kirkus Reviews"). Art/Fashion in the 21st Century

Description

The encounter between art and fashion has been a rapidly growing phenomenon over the last decade, with major international artists working with top fashion houses to produce contemporary masterpieces that challenge the traditional boundary between these two dynamic cultures. In Art/Fashion in the 21st Century, five chapters feature concise essays with profiles of the key designers, break-out stories about the most avant- garde projects and interviews with the leading lights of the art-fashion crossover phenomenon. Nearly 250 illustrations showcase collaborative art/fashion work from Acne Studios, Balenciaga, Chanel, Hussein Chayalan, Tracey Emin, Jean Paul Gaultier, Zaha Hadid, Hermes, Marc Jacobs, Calvin Klein, Jeff Koons, Stella McCartney, Issey Miyake, Takashi Murakami, Prada, Richard Prince, Anselm Reyle, Cindy Sherman, Juergen Teller, Viktor & Rolf, and many more. This is essential and inspiring reading for all those interested in the very cutting edge of both art and fashion and those who are already there.

Winner of the 2012 Michael L. Printz and William C. Morris Awards, this poignant and hilarious story of loss and redemption "explores the process of grief, second chances, and even the meaning of life" ("Kirkus Reviews").
